Miles and I have been spending this past week indoors for the most part. Except for a trip to see the Durham Bulls (without Miles) and a journey to the mountains (with Miles). We would’ve camped but trying to control Miles and set up a tent at the same time would be a little tough. Plus it wasn’t that much cooler out in the mountains. Oh, and then there was the car that had its window smashed at the trailhead. Also Miles got loose during our hike and I reached out to grab him and got his tail. So to answer some questions posed earlier. I am:
* reading The Yiddish Policemen’s Union STILL…I really like this book but I’ve been trying to finish this book for a while…less than 100 pages to go
* eating various tempeh burger concoctions involving cooking up slices of tempeh in various sauces from the fridge and then sometimes adding cheese and fake bacon to the sandwich.
* drinking too much caffeine in the form of hot beverages which I am strangely attracted to even during this hot weather
* watching lots of dvr, netflix, and movie rentals including Dead Like Me which is a TV series from Showtime about a girl who is a grim reaper and the Matthew Barney documentary, No Restraint, about his latest flim/artwork that takes place on a Japanese whaling ship and involves lots of petroleum jelly molds of objects. I also watched Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy because I heard the Fresh Air episode with Paul Rudd and he talks about how that film was the first movie he did with Judd Apatow. I also watched the first disc of the second season of Weeds which continues to be great fun.
* working at my new job which isn’t as fun as watching all that tv but pays better
* dreaming about elm (she’s arriving home in a couple of hours)
* contemplating going back to school and having to introduce myself during sharing time…

As Elm was taking me to the airport this morning, we saw our one of our neighborhood hobos who lives in the woods near our interstate exit picking up his groceries at the gas station. It makes us wonder, where in the woods he actually lives? It makes me sad because I am sure he has/had a family and one of those family members taught him how to ride a bike… In another Twin Peak incident, there was a well dressed man with a prosthetic leg walking along the highway near the airport like he was out for exercise. On a highway. Maybe you had to be there?

Elm and I made our way up to Baltimore to retrieve our fixed car–it took a week to get it fixed after the radiator and some other parts malfunctioned on Pratt St. It was a happy reunion for Bert and Miles who are showing their age and can no longer rumble for hours on end (this is a good thing) and we got to see the newly engaged couples (Rachel and Joey & Shannon and Sarah). We had a very non-vegetarian crab dinner at Bo Brooks where Elm impressed everyone with her crab dissecting skills and we all ended up covered in Old Bay. I think I could skip the crabs and go right to the Old Bay next time…maybe just get some Old Bay fries.
On Sunday we had brunch with Sarah & Shannon, hung out with the in-laws, and then headed to DC to see Lily Allen!

It was a good show with the bird and the bee as the opener (complete with back up singers dressed alike who were, alas, no Watson Twins but were good nonetheless) and a really fun dj who had the right combination of scratching and mash ups with great transitions with good song choices. Lily was really fun to see live but you could tell she was toward the end of her tour rather than just starting. She played about all of the songs from her album along with “Heart of Glass” by Blondie and a Keane cover.

I think it is strange that UPS is using a song from The Postal Service in a recent ad. I think it is stranger yet that this phenomenon has already been reported months ago on Wikipedia. I am noticing more short snips from obscure-ish bands in ads these days. The quality of music doesn’t always match the quality of the advertiser…like M. Ward for Cadillac? Again, this sort of thing has been reported on already.

I am New Jersey and it is very cold and windy. It was over 70 degrees at home this weekend so this is a complete shock to my southern bones.

Things I like about New Jersey: diners, Princeton, the little towns, Starbucks at rest stops, and the beach. Things I don’t like about New Jersey: turning right to turn left, highways that aren’t highways but people drive on them like they are highways, bad drivers, bad signage, and basically anything having to do with driving. Last time I was here, I stopped kinda short to turn left and the car behind me got rear-ended by a Mom driving a fancy SUV full of little kids behind her. Maybe it is like Massachusetts where I just need to “learn how to drive” (as my father was advised soon after moving to the state by a friendly fellow in a truck at an intersection with one of those blinking yellow lights that don’t really do anything).
I really like Princeton and this time I got a chance to check out the public library which has a similar look and feel to the Oak Park library and has a cafe, a store, and lots of comfy chairs and good light. Next time I am in town I am going to try to take an art and architectural tour of campus–there are some very interesting modern buildings and sculptures around the campus.
Now I am moving on to Red Bank…homeland of the director Kevin Smith.

I hope to get some posts up soon and catch up on our flickr stream and my birthday wishes. I only wish I could be as prolific as my big sister. These days I am lucky if I get more than three days in a row at home and it has been tough simply catching up with my laundry much less my blogging. Enough of excuses and on to my first list!
New stuff on my iPod (for better and for worse):
+ Fresh Air and This American Life podcasts (finally!)
+ Patty Griffin’s new album, Children Running Through (another great album that includes a duet with Emmylou)
+ Brasil 2Mil (fun collection of Brazilian music from minha mãe)
+ Lily Allen for sugar coated bitter brit-pop

Mr. Miles is now insisting on a walk…more later.
