I drove over 4 hours today for work…about 30 minutes less than the total time I spent at the school where I was working. I will be in the car for a similar amount of time tomorrow as I head into the mountains of Virginia with a stop in Greensboro and/or Winston Salem. Podcasts are my friends. In other news, Ellen is on Spring Break and was inspired to cook a fancy tart with a crust made out of slices of potato cooked in a springform pan with cheese and spinach filling (along with many fresh herbs). Hopefully she’ll post a photo on her site because it was pretty and yummy.

After the cold rain of Friday, it warmed up enough for a visit to Sarah P. Duke Gardens to see the flowering trees and daffodils.

We also wandered up from the gardens to campus where Miles pulled hard on his leash and scratched his long claws (he needs a trim) on the slate walkways as he tried to capture a squirrel. Duke really does feel and look like one of those perfect (maybe creepy?) colleges in the movies. It is clear where some of that $46,050 a year cost to attend Duke goes.
In other weekend news, I really am that Starbucks drinking, Volvo driving, NPR listening, liberal lemming…so I had to sign up for Showtime.

<img src="http://sho.com/site/thisamericanlife/season1/blog/tal_badge.gif"alt="Blog Icon" width="140"height="140"border="0"/>
But I will get $25 to sign up so it isn’t all bad, is it?

THEN my doctor recommended that I ease off the coffee (and/or spicy foods & bike riding which I said would be impossible…I will let you can google my “condition” on your own) so now I don’t have a way to get over the 3-5pm hump…or the 6pm…or the 7pm. I also need to exercise more (I gained 8 pounds in the last six months which pushed my BMI to 24.2), do my feet exercises, have two moles removed, eat less fried food and/or drink a glass of red wine a day. However, I just don’t think the red wine is going to wake me up in the morning like my coffee. At least there is always tea!

There isn’t much to report on from C’hill…just a lot of rain. Miles went to his second to last day of Family Dog 1. He impressed the teacher with his loose leash walking, his grasp of “leave it” and “wait”, and he started on “shake” which involves holding his paw in one hand and feeding him endless treats with the other. I am finally starting my new job which, so far, involves lots of spreadsheets and conference calls. Ellen and I are trying to eat in (inspired, as always, by my sister) and this week our menu includes many items from the Chicago Diner cookbook including: Thai Broccoli Peanut Stir Fry, Quinoa, Tempeh Sloppy Joes, and Seitan Fajitas. Yum.

Another week has blown by and now I get a four day weekend to enjoy. Melissa, a coworker (soon to be ex-coworker), is in town and we are showing her the sites or at least OUR sites. We’ve hit many of the major “It’s Carrboro” places (Elmo’s, Nested, WSM, Open Eye, and Fifth Season) along with a stop a Talullas to watch the Italy vs. Ukraine game (Ukraine, despite having a player with a Luke Wilson Royal Tenenbaums hair cut, lost the game 3-0). We also went to 3 CUPS where I was thrilled to find out they are now getting in a stock of amazing Artisan Cupcakes on Thursdays. We tried the a chocolate chip orange cupcake (tasted a lot like a Jaffa Cake) and a chocolate cupcake which were both topped with a ganache rather than a typical buttercream frosting. Which leads me to a linked obsession of mine: Amy Sedaris! Since her new movie is out, she seems to be on TV and NPR all of the time. NPR has a photo of her making her cupcakes (which she sells in New York), her cupcake recipe, and a link to the interview! Oh, while you are at it check out Liz’s new pouch!
Gotta run…today is Durham day–we are planning to go to Duke Gardens, Locopops, Ninth Street, Madhatters, and Locopops! More to come soon…
