Don’t read this if you don’t want to hear about dog vomit

I am just curious to see how the search traffic increases after that headline. Not to be too doocey but we’ve been dealing with several cleanups the last couple days after Miles ate something he shouldn’t have or, perhaps, he got into something sprayed on a yard. In any case, Miles tends to start running away from us as he does it so there have been trails down the stairway and, in one case, a complete circle around the dining room table (I was trying to get his collar and guide him to tile or wood floor). To further complicate matters we have carpeting that does a great job hiding stains but it makes it difficult to find the little spots that need cleaning. So far today he is vomit free and has kept his breakfast and lunch down. He also has his bounce back!

On the road again

After a full day of festivities yesterday, we are heading to Kansas City this evening. Miles is heading to the Doggie Spa once again (his last trip for a while, we think).

I can’t believe you are (at least) 3 years old now Buddy Miles. We hope you keep your spirit but lose a little bit of your pull on the leash this year.

If my Great Grandfather were alive today, he would be 122 (he was born in 1885). We are planning to celebrate all these birthdays at the People’s Parade in Carrboro and then we’ll try to find a spot to watch fireworks later this evening.

May flowers?

It was a relatively uneventful week given I spent the first half of it in bed trying to rid myself of some sort of fevering and aching illness. Miles and I have been making our circuit of the neighborhood most mornings. We’ve been admiring the progress of our new town pool being built next to the ‘hood and running into pretty much the same asian grandparents taking their grandkids for walks in the park. We get big smiles from the elderly asian couple that walk together slowly– she walks backward and he walks forward in front of her (they can’t see each other). The weather has been pretty amazing for morning walks but it is getting too hot by the middle of the day.
Ellen and I are starting to do more work on the garden now that we have actually have thriving plants (you can monitor the progress here). By “work” we mean watering.

We are also mourning the loss of Casco Bay Books. I don’t think it will really truly register until I am there in Portland–in just two short weeks!!. I can’t wait to hang out with the crew…also I will get to meet Miles’ cousin auntie Lulu for the first time! But it is going to be very strange and sad without the caffeine, magazine, clothing, and book fix from the store.

After the cold rain of Friday, it warmed up enough for a visit to Sarah P. Duke Gardens to see the flowering trees and daffodils.

We also wandered up from the gardens to campus where Miles pulled hard on his leash and scratched his long claws (he needs a trim) on the slate walkways as he tried to capture a squirrel. Duke really does feel and look like one of those perfect (maybe creepy?) colleges in the movies. It is clear where some of that $46,050 a year cost to attend Duke goes.
In other weekend news, I really am that Starbucks drinking, Volvo driving, NPR listening, liberal lemming…so I had to sign up for Showtime.

But I will get $25 to sign up so it isn’t all bad, is it?

I thought that last post was a bit depressing so I am going to list some of things I am looking forward to:

This American Life, the TV show!
Our weekend in NYC with Valex®
Our Memorial Day weekend in the mountains with B, S, B, S, & S.
Summertime at the beach with the crew
The arrival of someone’s sibling in October

I’ve also been contemplating getting E to agree that we should take a trip around the world for real at some point in the future. We’ve been thinking about going to Sri Lanka next year and it would be the perfect opportunity to just continue the journey east/west. However, E (voice of reason) points out the issues with time, jobs, money, and the fact that we would have to leave Miles behind. You can always dream, I suppose. We also have a long list of places we would like to visit this year including Colorado, Montana, Kansas, Arizona, New & Olde England, and California. Maybe this will be the year I win the lottery and we can become true nomads in going around the country in a VW bus with our dog. Actually, it probably doesn’t take winning the lottery to make that happen…

Miles learned a new trick over the last couple of months. He doesn’t particularly like balancing treats on his nose but he tolerates it for the reward. He does like it when you toss him a treat and then he grabs it out of the air like it’s a little bird.

Good news

Finally some good news! I knew Kansas would evolve.
Also, I am happy to report that Miles received his diploma from Family Dog 1 yesterday! Ellen and I took him out for ice cream at Maple View (actually, he got to eat liver treats and we ate ice cream). In addition to his diploma, he also got a ribbon (pics to be posted soon).

Bad news round up #2…
I don’t know what to think about the latest Floyd Landis allegations. It makes me angry on so many levels (it spoils the victory if it is true or not now that it is news).
Then I read about the dancing man in Carrboro being forced to stop dancing on the Weaver Street Market lawn?! His dancing is definitely not my style but he is a part of what makes Carrboro Carrboro. Plus he has a great story– going from robbing banks to dancing at WSM! If they stop the hooping, I am going to protest! I always thought the one rule was no six packs on the lawn…oh, and you’re not supposed to eat the birds.
